Scala is the most  ancient inhabited centre on the Amalfi Coast.It was the place where the aristocracy of the Amalfitan Republic chose to live and it shared in all its successes end defeats, benefiting from the trade with Oriental Countries, and bearing the consequences of the invasions by Roberto il Guiscardo in 1073 and by the fleet from Pisa in 1135 and in 1137.
